Is that they are mainly used to help prevent air leaks and nothing else. I had a set of 26x10.5x15 on some 15x8 wheels without tubes, bolted to the rims, and had some pretty bad experiences with the setup (no air leaks though). It was very unstable... I'm not sure if that could be attributed to not having tubes, or the smaller 15" wheel size (more sidewall), or the fact that the car could have not been aligned properly (probably the big reason). Most people will tell you that the car feels shaky back and forth with bias ply slicks, but my case was extraordinary. The car would violently jerk from side-to-side and was mostly uncorrectable... I came close to the wall a couple times and decided to sell the setup. I'm now running BFG's on stock wheels but not getting the traction in cold weather like I was before. Since my car is pretty low, I'd have to raise it up (coilovers) in the rear when I used the slicks... which I can imagine added a bit of positive camber as well as mess with the toe settings. I am guessing that's why it was so unstable, but I'm afraid to try it again. A couple friends of mine told me that Mickey Thompson is coming out with a street legal radial tire, but with an ultra sticky compound which should give traction like an ET slick. Not sure when they will be available, however. Anyway, back to the tubes thing.... coming from the place I bought them from, they recommended I NOT run tubes, because it just added unnecessary weight and served no other purpose. They could have made more money in the deal by selling me the tubes, but they supposedly told me the honest truth.
